Prunus armeniaca is the traditional Wild Apricot - a sturdy hardy tree in its wonderful natural state. Perfect for a wildlife garden or orchard area, this wild variety eventually forms broad, well-branched tree producing a profusion of lightly fragrant blossom in the spring followed by a dense canopy of lush green foliage. Grow it in a sunny, sheltered spot and once mature it’ll also provide a great harvest of sweet wild apricots which can be eaten fresh or used to make lovely sticky jams and desserts. Height: 9m (30’). Spread: 9m (30’). Plant apricot trees in rich fertile, well drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position. A south facing position is preferable to provide the spring flowers with protection from damaging frosts. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. If the tree is to be bush trained then drive a stake into the ground prior to planting. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball. For wall trained apricots attach support wires to the wall prior to planting. Plant fruit trees at their original soil level and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake or support wires, and water well.
